Welcome to Lesson 6 of the Basic Microsoft Excel Tutorial. In this lesson we will cover Importing. I hope you enjoy the lesson.

Importing

Step 1: Select File

Select File and then Open. This will bring up the open dialog box. From here select a file that you want to import. You can click on the drop-down box at the bottom of the dialog to select different types of files to import.

Step 2: Text Import Wizard Step 1

Select if the file is delimited or fixed width. Delimited means that there is a character separating the values in your file. This can be a comma, a tab, or some other character. Fixed width specifies that the values you are importing have a fixed number of characters.

Step 3: Text Import Wizard Step 2

If you selected delimited you will be asked what character is being used as the delimiter. Once you select the character the data preview window will display a vertical line showing where the columns will be. If you selected fixed width you will be asked to specify where the column breaks are.

Step 4: Text Import Wizard Step 3

This screen lets you specify the data format that each column should use. You can also choose not to import a column from this screen.

Step 5: Finished

When you are done click on finish. Your data will then be displayed in Microsoft Excel.
