Welcome to Lesson 8 of the Intermediate Microsoft Word Tutorial. In this lesson we will cover the Status Bar. I hope you enjoy the lesson.

The Status Bar

Step 1: At the Bottom

At the bottom of the typing area, below the horizontal scroll bar, is a Status bar that displays information about the current page number, the position of the insertion point and the status of certain settings.

Step 2: The Left

The Left portion of the bar shows the page number of the current screen, the section number and the page number as a fraction of the total number of pages in the document, 15/16 for example for page 15 of 16.

Step 3: The Middle

When the insertion point is on the current screen, the middle portion of the bar shows its vertical position on the page as measured in inches as well as in lines, and its horizontal position as measured in columns. These readings can be quote helpful when you are trying to place characters or other elements in very precise places.

Step 4: The Right

The right side of the bar contains abbreviations for settings that you can turn on and off by double clicking the mouse on them.
